Everton are facing ‘severe trouble’ – Stefan Borson

Everton will need to find cash to pay the bills throughout the winter period when there is little money coming through the door at Goodison Park.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Merseyside giants will face a “cash crunch” later this year when they have to pay the operating costs, high wage bill and money to Laing O’Rourke – their main stadium contractor – to complete the new development.

Everton started work on the new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock in 2021, with the club expected to make the move from Goodison ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Despite the development being projected to cost around £500million, it is now expected to set the Merseysiders back more than £800million.

It comes at a time when Everton’s finances are a concern, with the club likely to face cash-flow issues later this year due to their ownership issues.

Everton stadium contractors could ask for money upfront

Borson revealed the stadium contractors could ask for payment to be paid upfront for any work they need to complete over the next few months.

He told Football Insider: “They have got themselves out of trouble each time they have been in more severe trouble.

“But that said, they clearly need to get on with doing a deal because as we get into the autumn and winter, cash is going to start to dry up in terms of cash inflows.

“They are not going to be able to get money in from season tickets or TV because they have already come in, so they will have limited amounts of matchday money coming in and will have lots of money going out.

“They will have all the operating costs of the club, the big wage bill and the bills to pay for the stadium on top of that.

“It would not be a stretch to think the stadium constructors are going to want payment up front and in advance for any stage payments that are being made to complete the stadium.

“They are going to have a cash crunch as we go through September, October, November and December before we get to another Premier League payment in early January or late December.

“But they are going to have to find the cash for that period from somewhere.”
