‘Everton boosted as Moyes takes transfer control – I worked with him for years…’

Everton are reshuffling their recruitment team this summer in a move which could see manager David Moyes take more control on the transfer front.

The legendary Toffees boss, 62, has continued to be involved in transfer business at each of his recent clubs and looks set to reprise that role back on Merseyside.

Kevin Thelwell and Dan Purdy have made the move to Rangers and will not be replaced like-for-like at Everton.

The Friedkin Group are expected to back Moyes heavily this summer in the first summer window since their takeover last year (2024).

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park during Moyes’ reign between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has insisted losing Thelwell and Purdy will “play right into Moyes’ hands this summer”.

‘Everton expected to make 10 summer signings’

Wyness has previously told Football Insider (6 June) that he expects at least 10 incomings at Everton this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the ex-CEO – who worked closely with Moyes at Everton – claimed the Scot will “relish the ability to have control”.

Wyness insisted the Toffees boss was the “hardest-working guy in football” during their time together.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’m still concerned about the recruitment team. We still haven’t got the whole team in place, and Thelwell and Purdy have moved on.

“But in a funny way, this will play right into Moyes’s hands. Having worked with him for so many years, I know he will relish the ability to have control over most of the signings and he does know what he’s doing.

“There’s no doubt about it, he understands players.

But the thing is, with the demands of a modern-day manager, does he have the time he used to, to be able to go out and see those players? He loves to do it.

“And he was the hardest-working guy in football. He was always on the road, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Wherever he could see a game, he’d go and see it.

“But now, these days, it’s a little bit harder to do that with the way things are going and a new stadium to get into and all sorts of things to adjust for.”

Everton line up double Liverpool deal

Meanwhile, Football Insider has been told by Mick Brown (9 June) that Everton are interested in signing Liverpool duo Ben Doak and Joe Gomez.

The last player to make the switch from the red side of Merseyside to the blue was Gary Ablett in 1992, but a shocking double deal could now be on the cards.

Everton have held a long-term interest in Doak and have also joined a number of Premier League clubs in the race for Gomez.
