Everton cannot afford to lose against West Ham says senior player

By Emma Sanders

Gareth Barry has hailed Everton’s clash against West Ham as a must-win game for his side after they have endured five games without a victory.

Everton have not won since defeating Middlesbrough 3-1 at Goodison Park in mid-September and desperately need a win against West Ham to boost their confidence.

In the last five fixtures, Ronald Koeman’s side have suffered three losses and with the ever-improving West Ham side their next league opponents, Barry insists they must bounce back from their 2-1 loss against Burnley on the weekend.

“It’s a run of game without a victory. It’s something we’ll have to look at,” Barry told the Liverpool Echo.

“West Ham at home next weekend is a big game. We need to get back to winning ways – the quicker the better.”

Everton currently sit in sixth position in the Premier League, five points off their Merseyside neighbours Liverpool who are joint top on points with Arsenal and Manchester City.

Overall, Everton have one of the best defensive records in the league, conceding just eight goals, a number bettered only by Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Southampton.

They’ve scored regularly enough too, with Romelu Lukaku already netting six goals in Everton’s opening nine league fixtures.

They will need their Belgian striker on top form this weekend too as they face a crucial encounter with West Ham at Goodison Park.
