Everton could land devastating new six-point deduction – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the club could face a new “six-point deduction” in a third Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) case.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the third hearing is set to take place in the new year and may have been delayed while the Dan Friedkin takeover cleared.

Everton were hit with two points deductions last season but in the second case, an independent commission ruled that arguments over the capitalisation of stadium interest payments was too complex to be heard at the time.

That has left the Toffees in limbo over a potential third punishment, with the Liverpool Echo claiming last month that (20 November) the matter is yet to be resolved.

Everton’s Friedkin Group takeover has now been resolved while they have also formally taken ownership of the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium.

The 52,888-seater ground will officially open for the 2025-26 campaign.

Everton to learn points deduction fate in new year, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “We always thought this hearing would come early in the new year, so nothing’s changed there.

“I don’t necessarily think the Premier League will have postponed this hearing until the new owners come in, but it’s possible they will have taken it into consideration.

“I think it would’ve made sense if they did.

“It should be a black-and-white position between the Everton auditors and the Premier League’s accountants.

“Somebody has got to get the definition of this right, it’s purely about the interest payments on the construction of the stadium.

“The problem with this is that it could affect multiple seasons under the PSR rules – it could be something like six points.

“Everton have fully co-operated. I’m still fully hopeful that this hearing can be resolved very quickly.

“The club’s auditors have got to stick up for themselves.”
