Everton could land third points deduction at start of next season – sources
Everton will be hit with a third sanction at the start of next season, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Toffees are set to face a fine for issues associated with their stadium costs.
Sources told Football Insider earlier this week (15 April) that the Merseysiders are “nailed on” to be hit with a financial penalty over an unresolved matter regarding costs for their new ground on Bramley-Moore Dock.
Sean Dyche’s side are currently in a dispute with the Premier League over the status of certain costs associated with their new stadium, which remains under construction.
Everton to land third sanction early next season – O’Rourke
Everton were handed a two-point deduction last week (8 April) after they breached the allowed losses threshold of £105million in the three-year period to the 2022-23 season by £16.6million.
However, the club are adamant that £6.5million of this overspending must not be attributable to their profit and sustainability and it should be audited in their stadium accounts – not registered as a loss on their books.
While Premier League chiefs have rejected these claims, a subsequent hearing is expected to be held over the summer, meaning a sanction will be dealt out early in the 2024-25 campaign.
This could result in another points deduction for the struggling Toffees, but well-placed sources have told Football Insider that a fine is more likely due to the relatively limited scale of this alleged breach.
Such a penalty will be Everton’s third in less than a year after their 10-point deduction in November, which was reduced to six after an appeal, and their two-point deduction earlier this month.

Everton sit 16th in the Premier League table after they were thrashed 6-0 by Chelsea on Monday night (15 April).
They next face fellow relegation fighters Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon (21 April).
