Everton could now land new nine-point deduction this season – sources

Everton could now land a new devastating nine-point deduction this season amid confusion over the club’s potential punishment if they enter administration, sources have told Football Insider.

The Merseyside club are at risk of insolvency with debts growing to over £500million and the takeover deal with 777 Partners still under review by the Premier League.

As revealed by Football Insider, Everton are at risk of entering administration after the catastrophic development of failing to receive a vital payment from 777 Partners this week.

Administration would guarantee a nine-point deduction, but the Premier League regulations do not state whether the club would face it this season or next.

Under section E.37 of the Premier League handbook, it states that clubs entering insolvency will face “a deduction of nine points scored or to be scored in the League competition.”

Everton hit administration hurdle under Premier League rules

It means that it is up to the Premier League to decide whether Everton would face a points deduction this season or start the 2024-25 campaign on minus points.

It has not been ruled out that Everton could strategically enter administration this season if they cleared the relegation zone by nine points.

Administration would clear the club’s debts and allow them to explore new takeover options.

However, the uncertainty in the Premier League regulations has left Goodison Park chiefs anxious of the punishment being pushed back until next season.
