Everton could sell Dele Alli for £8m as ‘lucky’ transfer claim issued – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Everton could cash in on Dele Alli for just £8million during the summer transfer window.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Toffees would be “lucky” to get any more for the 26-year-old after his January move from Tottenham.

The Sun claim (17 May) Everton may sell Alli this summer and are looking to bank anywhere up to £20million for his sale.

He joined for no transfer fee from Tottenham, although the deal was heavily incentivised with performance-related bonuses and clauses.

Whelan insisted Everton would struggle to get an eight-figure fee for Alli this summer.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “They’d be lucky to get anywhere near £20million. Dele’s come into the club but has not been in the side.

“He’s not broken into it and not nailed down a starting position since he got there. He’s not contributed enough. There have been glimpses but these glimpses don’t demand a £20million price tag. Glimpses are glimpses, they’re moments.

“They’re not continuous for 90 minutes. I think that’s where the issue is. So £20million, you’re never going to get that. I think £8million is about right for Dele Alli right now. That is exactly what he demands in terms of a price tag on his head for what he has produced at Tottenham and done at Everton.

“You can’t demand £20million for a player there has given you a glimpse. That is all it is. I still believe that if someone’s paying money, they’re taking a chance.

“There’s a player in him but he’s whether he wants to unleash the player. Can he get to that point again where he was when he first started playing with Tottenham? Is that hunger and desire there to be successful and still be a main man for a football club?

“That’s down to Dele Alli himself. No one can else can drag that out of him. He’s got to produce that himself but right now, he’s looking at £8million and he’s lucky to get that because he’s been non-existent for five to six years.”
