Everton manager Sam Allardyce is feeling the heat once more following comments he has made about Davy Klaassen after the 1-1 draw with Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Fans are ramping up the volume against the boss, who claims he cannot select rarely the former Ajax ace – a three-time title winner – because if he does and the Toffees lose, he will get it in the neck.

His comments follow on from his explanation surrounding his substitution of Wayne Rooney against the Reds, which lead to raised eyebrows – not least from the man himself – whereby he agreed that the ageing attacker struggled against the better teams.

As quoted in the Liverpool Echo, Big Sam said: “Davy Klaassen is still an anomaly to me, as to will he or won’t he?

“If I had the opportunity to play him I would, but I haven’t because I’ve got to win. So I don’t have the luxury of saying ‘go on, give it a go lad!’ because if we lose it’s me that gets the stick.

“So if I haven’t got that luxury. If the opportunity comes along for anybody, be it through injury or suspension, hopefully he can show us what he’s got.”

There have been calls from supporters to give the 25-year-old more of a role in the team and it was expected that after Gylfi Sigurdsson’s injury, that would happen.

But despite the crocked Icelandic’s absence, it’s had little impact on the Dutch midfielder’s inclusion in the side and he continues to linger on the periphery.

Saturday was a massive opportunity for the Toffees to get one over their city rivals, particularly as Jurgen Klopp selected a weakened line-up with half an eye on Tuesday’s Champions League showdown.

But it was not to be, as the Toffees made more of an attempt to shut-out a vastly weakened Liverpool side rather than to win the game.

Here is a selection of Twitter reactions to the manager’s comments on Klaassen:
