Former Everton ace Steven Pienaar has called time on his career and decided to pursue a future in the media instead.
And it’s news that has got supporters of the Toffees on social media with some hilarious reactions.
The 35-year-old midfielder was hugely popular during his time at Goodison Park and while his former employers seemingly struggling for form and lacking in attack it has led for calls for the ex-Blue to get his boots back on and to come and play against Burnley this weekend.
Supporters of the club have been hugely critical of their side under Sam Allardyce and are disappointed with the club’s progression given the huge spending frenzy they have embarked upon since Farhad Moshiri took charge of affairs at the club.
And with their Merseyside rivals Liverpool seemingly playing some of the best football in Europe at this current point in time, it only highlights the dire and lacklustre style they are seeing at Goodison.
The South African international earned 61 caps for his country throughout his career which started out in the Eredivisie with Dutch side Ajax where he won two championship titles.
Here is a selection of reactions on social media after hearing the news of Pienaar’s retirement:
Fancy playing left back for the last few games?!? To be honest I’d let you manage the club over Allardyce….

Invite him along next Saturday. And tell him to bring his boots.

The best technically gifted footballer I’ve ever seen pull on a blue shirt.
