Everton fans have reacted to the news that former Toffees midfielder Steven Pienaar has been named the club’s International Ambassador.

The South African ace hung up his boots for good recently after spending his final footballing days in his homeland with Bidvest Wits but featured for the Blues for four years between 2012-2016.

And the former attacker was pleased to announce the news on his official Twitter account.

Pienaar, now 36, made 71 appearances during his time on Merseyside, scoring seven goals in that time and became an integral and popular member of the team, particularly amongst supporters.

And after hearing the news of the former Ajax ace’s appointment to the club’s ambassadorial role, fans have taken to Twitter to show their delight.

Many of them were keen to see Pienaar back and even joked that they would like to see him on the field of play in an Everton shirt.

The South African was renowned for his surges from the midfield zone, his pace in attack and exuberant runs forward – everything that the Toffees are missing at the moment.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce is under increasing pressure to change his side’s style of play after being criticised for relying on playing the long-ball game and the slow tempo his team consistently plays with.

Here is a selection of Twitter reactions to the news of Pienaar’s role at the club:
