‘Things will be different’, ‘Legend’ – Everton fans react as senior player sends message to fans
Everton fans do not want Wayne Rooney to leave the club if reactions to the Toffees forward’s Twitter verdict are anything to go by.
The 32-year-old took to the social media platform to thank supporters for their support throughout the 2017/18 campaign amidst speculation that the hitman will join MLS side DC United in the summer.
Rooney wrote: “Big thank you to all the @Everton fans for your amazing support this season. Me and the lads appreciate it, it means a lot!”
Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer only returned to his boyhood club last summer on a two-year deal but following his substitution in the Merseyside derby – a decision that visibly riled the player – it looked as though his days at Goodison Park were numbered.
According to a report, Everton invited Rooney’s representatives to hold crisis talks in a bid to stave off a negative backlash from supporters about a potential transfer of the 11 goals in 40 games player who has been mainly used as a defensive midfielder this season.
But judging by reactions from Blues fans, they’re desperate to see the 32-year-old stay on at the club beyond the summer and are hopeful that under new management things will be different.
Here is a selection of Twitter reactions from supporters after their hero took to the social media platform:
