Everton fans react on Twitter to Stekelenburg display against Chelsea
By Harvey Byrne
Maarten Stekelenburg started in goal for Everton against Chelsea on Saturday evening – and fans on Twitter were left unimpressed by his display.
The 34-year-old veteran has established himself as Ronald Koeman’s number one goalkeeper ahead of Joel Robles.
He was unable to prevent a strong Chelsea team from securing a 5-0 victory at Stamford Bridge following an Eden Hazard double alongside, Marcos Alonso, Diego Costa and Pedro strikes.
Many fans on social media identified the Netherlands internationals goalkeeper for being at fault for the goals.
Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Despite Stekelenburg's 2 penalty saves against Man City, the guy is pants. Keeper still needed! #EFC

Alonso and Burnley's first; maybe Stekelenburg can't be bothered saving poorly-hit shots. He only saves 25-yard screamers. Rubbish. #efc

Jagielka, Cleverley, Oviedo and Stekelenburg – none of them good enough to wear the royal blue anymore.#EFC

I love how after one good game everyone figured Stekelenburg had stopped being a journeyman at 34. Would much rather have Robles #EFC

Seen enough from #Stekelenburg now to see he's clearly not the answer. #EFC

Stekelenburg made the switch to Goodison Park in the summer from Championship side Fulham.
He had spent last season on loan at Southampton with Koeman, where he covered for the injured Fraser Forster before becoming the south coast club’s number two.
He has now made 12 appearances for Everton this season conceding 15 goals and keeping just three clean sheets.
The goalkeeper has been heavily involved in the club’s recent poor form and when he dropped out of the team for Robles last week the side kept a clean sheet against West Ham in a 2-0 victory.
In other Everton news, Marouane Fellaini named this Toffees ace in his best XI.
