Everton ‘forced to pay Jack Grealish fee’ regardless of season-ending blow

Jack Grealish appears unlikely to play for Everton again this season after suffering a crushing injury blow.

Everton have revealed Grealish will need surgery after sustaining a break in his foot, with the expectation he will miss the rest of the campaign.

Grealish joined Everton on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City in the summer transfer window.

The deal includes the option for David Moyes’s side to buy the 30-year-old, who is believed to be on around £300,000 a week, for £50million next summer.

It is understood Everton are paying £225,000 a week of Grealish’s wages during his time on Merseyside.

How Everton may have structured Jack Grealish deal with Man City

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider about the kind of deal Everton could have agreed with Pep Guardiola’s side for Grealish.

The 30-year-old registered two goals and six assists in 22 appearances before picking up his injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the costs of the deal for Everton, Borson said: “I think you can almost look at it the other way and say at the start the season when they buy him, let’s say that the number is somewhere in the order of £12m, they say, ‘We’ll pay Manchester City £12m for Jack Grealish for one year and City will still take care of all of the other costs’, so all of his wage cost, which is more than £12m obviously.

“City take care of that. Everton are in for £12m come what may. If he gets injured on the first day of his loan, tough luck, £12m down the pan. If he gets injured halfway through, tough luck, £6m down the pan.

“The only question is who is going to rehabilitate him during his injury? Is that going to be on loan at Everton or does the player prefer to have rehabilitation at City? I think he’d probably stay at Everton.”

How Everton landed on the wrong side of Grealish transfer risk

Borson insisted Everton have just been unlucky Grealish picked up his injury with several games still to be played this season.

“Everton as part of the deal pay around the £12m, whether that’s the right number or not, it’s a negotiation, but part of it is you’re paying it come what may,” said Borson.

“If the player plays appallingly, if you don’t play the player, you’re still paying £12m. If he’s player of the year and scores 30 goals, it’s still only £12m a year. It cuts both ways.

“That was the commercial deal agreed and injury is obviously always a possibility in any deal of this nature and, unfortunately, it’s happened halfway through.”

There is still an expectation Everton will sign Grealish permanently this summer, but there will have to be some negotiation with Man City around his fee.
