Everton given emphatic response to mega bid for 27-year-old PL attacker – report

By Harvey Byrne

Swansea have emphatically rejected Everton’s mega £27million bid for attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to a report.

ESPN have claimed on their website that the Swans have rejected a fee from the Toffees, which would top their record sale of Wilfried Bony to Manchester City by £2million.

Additionally, only Jordan Pickford’s and Romelu Lukaku’s signings would represent higher fees spent than the reported £27million, which shows that the Toffees are eager to seal Sigurdsson’s signature.

However, Swansea are also keen to keep their star man, who agreed a new four-year deal last summer.

The Icelandic star is in his second spell with the Swans following a loan spell in 2012 where he eventually left for Tottenham permanently.

Spurs are also said to be interested in securing his signature again this summer and ESPN also quote reports as stating that he may be tempted by playing European football next season.

However, Swansea know Sigurdsson is vital to keeping them within the Premier League after his nine goals and 13 assists in 38 matches last season.

Football Insider verdict:

Given that Ross Barkley reportedly wants out of Everton and the fact Ronald Koeman stated that he wants more creative players, a move for Sigurdsson certainly makes sense. The club have already spent good money on Davy Klaassen, but the Europa League will significantly extend the Toffees’ fixture list and that means more bodies are needed to help Koeman keep his side competitive in all competitions next season. Additionally, Sigurdsson could walk into a number of Premier League and the fact that Everton are going for him shows the ambition the club are showing this summer.
