Everton have agreed ‘very good’ midfielder deal – ‘he’s going to shine’

Everton have agreed a deal with a veteran midfielder ahead of their upcoming campaign in the Premier League.

The Toffees have completed two summer signings so far, making Charly Alcaraz’s loan deal permanent, as well as bringing in Thierno Barry from Villarreal.

In addition, the Merseyside club have also been working hard to secure the futures of those already at the club, tying the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite, Seamus Coleman, and Michael Keane down to new deals.

Idrissa Gueye has also signed a one-year contract extension at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the option of a further season if the clause is triggered next summer.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Gueye’s extension is “great news” for his old side.

‘Gueye deal will definitely be two years’

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Gueye will “shine” next season and that the one-year extension clause will be triggered.

The midfielder started 35 Premier League games for the Toffees in 2024/25, playing a huge role as they avoided a relegation battle in the second half of the campaign.

Wyness added that the Senegal international is exactly what Moyes is looking for in midfield.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think he was sticking out for a two-year deal, and it’s ended up as one year with an option.

“That makes sense for both parties because I’ve got a very good feeling that Idrissa is going to shine again this season, and he’s going to be fit again for next season. That option will get exercised, so it’ll be two years.

“He keeps himself incredibly fit. He was an outstanding player in many matches last year and I think he’s exactly what Moyes is looking for in that position.

“I think it’s great for the club. I’m really pleased he hasn’t gone and I think a year with an option is great news. I’m really pleased that he’s going to be there as part of the backbone of the team.”

Everton make move for Premier League star

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have rejected an enquiry from Everton about the availability of John McGinnsources have told Football Insider.

Villa have told the Merseyside club that their captain is currently not for sale.

Sources say that Everton are planning to move for McGinn later in the transfer window if Unai Emery’s side add midfield reinforcements.

The Merseysiders have been told that the Scotland international was unhappy with being regularly subbed by Emery in big Villa games last season, and are willing to pay up to £30million to bring him to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
