Kieran Maguire: Everton have ‘unlocked’ new cash pile after £5m U-turn
Everton have “unlocked” a new revenue opportunity with a deal to appear in a lucrative mid-season tournament in Australia.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees’ participation in the Sydney Super Cup.
The Merseysiders confirmed last Thursday (7 July) that they will compete in the four-team tournament during the break for the Qatar World Cup in November.
Frank Lampard’s side are taking the place of Scottish giants Rangers, who pulled out of the competition because of a fan backlash over Celtic’s involvement in the tournament.
The Ibrox club are facing a £5million bill from the competition organisers following their U-turn, as reported by The Scottish Sun back in April.
Everton meanwhile are teetering on the edge of Financial Fair Play ramifications after losses of over £370m in the last three years.
Maguire claims that the tournament Down Under is a smart way to broaden their turnover sources.
“I think Everton are looking to unlock new revenue streams,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“Pre-season clashes are one route they can go down. They are a sufficiently large club to warrant a fee from a promoter.

“They would attract more people to attend a match and there is a large ex-pat community out there.
“Everton have a profile which is large enough to include people who want to see the team that they would only be able to watch through a TV screen in Australia.”
