Everton hit by another injury blow amid Dominic Calvert-Lewin update - pundit

Jordan Pickford will be a major loss for Everton, according to Alex McLeish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Scotland manager claimed it was “sod’s law” that Pickford has picked up an injury just as Dominic Calvert-Lewin returns to fitness.

As quoted by club media on Friday (16 September), Frank Lampard revealed he is hopeful that the goalkeeper, 28, will be available straight after the international break.

Meanwhile, he claimed Calvert-Lewin is “close” to a return but did not confirm whether he will start the game with West Ham on Sunday (18 September).

The 25-year-old has not featured this term after suffering a knee injury just before the beginning of the season.

“That’s sod’s law, as well as a devastating blow,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Just when you think you are getting back to a wee bit of form then you lose a couple of tremendous players.

“It’s good that the striker is getting back to fitness. But losing Pickford, who has been a bit of a talisman, a saviour for Everton over the years, is another blow.

“When you are a team, you have key players and he is a key player. When you lose key players, you tend to find the team doesn’t function as well and results don’t quite go the way you expect them to go. Then you try to look for reasons.

“There used to be an element of the press that thought you were making excuses as if you can wave a magic wand and say ‘My reserve goalkeeper will be even better’ but it doesn’t quite work like that.”

In other news, Dele Alli is expected to exit Everton permanently after a development.
