Everton: Idrissa Gueye’s future could be in doubt as David Moyes remains keen on Tomas Soucek swoop

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye could be a victim of David Moyes’ pursuit of West Ham United star Tomas Soucek.

Soucek remains on Moyes’ radar as a potential summer signing for Everton after they worked together at West Ham, according to a new report from talkSPORT.

The Czech midfielder is nearing the end of his sixth full season as a Hammer, having permanently joined the club from Sparta Prague in July 2020 after a short loan spell in East London.

He has played over 250 times for the club and been a key part of numerous sides under several different bosses, but talkSPORT’s latest report claims that he is open to a new challenge this summer as he approaches the final year of his contract.

Everton’s transfer plans will be taking shape soon as they aim to consistently challenge for Europe under Moyes, and the potential arrival of Soucek could spell the end of the road on Merseyside for Gueye.

Why could Idrissa Gueye leave if Tomas Soucek joins Everton?

Gueye has remained a key part of Everton’s midfield this season, with this being his fourth campaign back at the club since returning from a three-year stint at PSG.

The Senegal international has appeared 21 times for the Toffees in the Premier League so far in 2025-26, but will be 37-years-old in September and is surely running out of time at the top level.

He is approaching the end of his Everton contract this summer, but the club do hold the option to extend that deal by another season if they feel his performances have warranted doing so.

Gueye is a fan-favourite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and remains an important player for Moyes right now, but the idea of Soucek joining to take up a similar midfield role could well mean that he is allowed to leave this summer.

The Czech midfielder also likes to play in a deeper midfield role, is five years younger than Gueye, and looks to be a better option overall from a statistical standpoint.

Sources have told Football Insider that Everton are set to receive £60million after signing a shirt sponsorship deal, but they are likely to focus such funds on attacking players this summer.

If Moyes really is keen on Soucek and wants to work with him again at Everton, then it does seem likely that the most similar profile of player, in Gueye, will be moved on.

What has Moyes said about Soucek in the past?

Soucek was one of Moyes’ first signings in his second spell at West Ham, and the pair worked together for over four years before the Scot’s 2024 departure.

The 31-year-old was an integral part of the Hammers’ Conference League triumph under Moyes, who heaped praise on him after he scored against his Everton side last March.

Moyes said: “Tomas Soucek is a really good goalscorer. We signed him as a goalscoring midfielder.

“He’s great in both boxes. He’s a top lad as well. I’m pleased for him but not for us.”

It is clear that Moyes holds Soucek in high regard, so if he does want to leave East London, Everton could well end up as one of the favourites to land his signature this summer.
