Everton keen on 20-year-old from PL rivals as contract talks stall – report
By Derek Smithson
Everton are interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, according to a report.
The Daily Mirror claim that the Toffees and West Brom are both eyeing the 20-year-old as his future at Old Trafford has come into doubt.
It is understood that contract talks have stalled between the youngster and United as the player is worried about his chances of breaking into the first team.
Henderson was a part of the England Under-20 squad that won the World Cup on Sunday as they beat Venezuela 1-0, with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring the decisive goal.
The United shot stopper played a back-up role to England’s number one Freddie Woodman of Newcastle, who pulled of a crucial penalty save in the final.
Henderson spent part of last season on loan at League Two club Grimsby, where he kept four clean sheets in his seven appearances.
The goalkeeper is yet to make a single appearances for his parent club United and may find it difficult to do so with David De Gea and Sergio Romero considered the senior options.
Football Insider verdict:
Henderson should be looking for at least a loan away from United next season as it’s crucial he experiences regular first team action. Everton themselves need a someone to take the number one reign at Goodison Park next year as Joel Robles and Maarten Stekelenburg don’t quite have the ability needed to break into the top six of the league. Henderson would certainly not go straight into the Toffees starting line-up, but a move for the youngster makes sense. Ronald Koeman has shown his desire to promote youth and that is something that should encourage Henderson. He would also join a long-list of English talents already at Everton and he would know a few from international duty.
