Everton: Keith Wyness shares ‘stunning stat’ that sheds new light on slump – ‘I find it hard to believe’

Everton’s squad could be suffering from fatigue as the Toffees are ending the season in poor form.

That is according to the club’s former chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who believes Everton’s six-game winless run in the Premier League is only down to squad burnout.

David Moyes’s side had been on track to qualify for Europe this season, but those hopes have ended ahead of the final day of the Premier League campaign.

Everton will now travel to Tottenham with nothing to play for other than pride, and a huge say in whether the north London club suffer relegation to the Championship.

It has though been a successful first campaign for Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Moyes will be looking to strengthen his squad in the summer to push for Europe again next season.

Everton ‘bottom of the table’ in one ‘stunning’ statistic

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – does find the thought of the squad suffering with fatigue “hard to believe.”

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness is not reading anything into the Toffees’ form ahead of next season.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “When you actually look at it, although Everton haven’t been flirting with relegation, we’ve actually only got one point more than we did last season, which is really quite a stunning stat.

“The other stat that surprised me was that Everton are bottom of the table in the number of substitutions made. That may mean that the squad, and with the injuries we’ve had, there’s some fatigue to a degree, although I still find that hard to believe for professional footballers, especially when they haven’t been in Europe.

“But nevertheless, you’ve got to take that into account because they looked flat against Sunderland, and they’re ending the season flat. I don’t think there’s anything more than that.”

Everton target Chelsea striker as part of transfer plans

Adding depth to his squad will be crucial for Moyes this summer to aid his push for Europe, and the 63-year-old is set to be backed by the ownership.

Everton are looking for a new striker, and they are set to reignite their interest in Liam Delap, whose move to Chelsea has failed to work out.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Chelsea are willing to listen to offers on Delap this summer.

The Blues paid Ipswich £30million for the 23-year-old last summer, and Everton may need to match that figure in order to agree a deal.
