Everton make decision on activating £4.2m Idrissa Gueye clause – sources

Everton are not likely to activate the one-year extension clause in Idrissa Gana Gueye’s contract, sources have told Football Insider.

The 34-year-old’s deal at Goodison Park is set to expire at the end of the 2023-24 campaign – but the Merseysiders have an option to extend his stay an extra 12 months.

Gueye has been a key part of Sean Dyche’s Everton side as they once again fight against relegation to the Championship.

But with their ongoing financial woes, it is believed the Toffees could now move to get the Senegal international’s big wage off the books – even if they remain in the Premier League.

According to Capology, Gueye earns £80,000-a-week at Goodison Park – meaning it would cost almost £4.2million to keep him at the club another 12 months.

He has made 23 appearances across all competitions in the 2023-24 campaign – starting in 19 of those outings.

The former Aston Villa star returned for a second spell at Everton in 2022 – re-joining the club for a reported fee of around £2million.

He has now made 165 appearances across all competitions for the Merseysiders.

Gueye is not the only Everton star out of contract in June – with Andy Lonergan, Ashley Young, Seamus Coleman, Dele Alli and Andre Gomes also set to leave the club unless renewals can be agreed.
