Everton ‘momentum’ helps ‘high-quality management team’ agree new sponsor deals

Everton are using their increasing momentum to agree new commercial deals at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Toffees have a “high-quality management” team working on deals with potential sponsors.

It comes after Everton announced last week Heinz has become the club’s first-ever official sauce supplier.

That deal follows previous agreements with the likes of Pepsi and Budweiser since moving from Goodison Park to the Hill Dickinson Stadium last summer.

While Everton’s finances won’t receive a major boost as a result of those deals, it bodes well for upcoming commercial partnerships.

Why Everton have greater appeal for brands

Football Insider revealed on 3 March Everton are looking for £15million a year for their front-of-shirt sponsorship after holding talks with interested parties.

The Merseyside giants are currently sponsored by Stake, but the gambling firm’s £10m-a-year deal is set to expire at the end of this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed what Everton’s latest deal with Heinz suggests about their commercial operations.

“Clearly, if you’ve got relationships in multiple places within an organisation, particularly at maybe head office, or you’ve got a relationship where somebody has already spent money with you in one territory, it will of course make it easier to do a deal in another,” said Borson.

“I think the Everton proposition looks quite polished right now. They’ve got a high-quality new management team in there. They’re winning a decent amount of games on the pitch and the stadium looks great, so everything looks quite polished and shiny.

“Brands prefer to be connected with that kind of situation rather than a distressed situation where there’s things that are not going well, which is why we’ve seen some of the issues cropping up at Spurs, for example, where we’re seeing brands wanting to pull away from those scenarios.”

How Everton ‘momentum’ is improving sponsor talks

Borson revealed how momentum is playing a part for Everton in their talks with sponsors, with David Moyes’s side currently sitting eighth in the Premier League table.

“I think there’s also momentum in these discussions and situations,” said Borson.

“Everton right now have got good momentum, and they’ll look to build on that in the summer as they start to rebuild the side. I think they’ve had a really good season given the spend, given the budget and everything else.

“Clearly, they’d want to try and get into Europe if they could, that would be ideal, and then surely but steadily build from where they are.”
