Kieran Maguire: The ‘worst is behind’ Everton after £295m reveal

The high level of spending in the Premier League transfer market may mean Everton are past the worst of the pandemic’s fiscal impact.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees’ performance throughout the pandemic.

Everton made league-record losses for the 2019-20 financial year and are expected to post another hefty shortfall for 2020-21 in the coming weeks.

The £139.9million they lost in 2019-20, the first Covid-hit season, followed up a £112m deficit in the 2018-19 campaign.

But business analysts Deloitte noted on Tuesday (1 February) that Premier League transfer spend totalled £295m this January.

That is higher than the pre-pandemic five-year average, and Deloitte chalked this up to the “easing of financial pressures” on top-flight clubs.

Maguire claims that the Toffees’ financial woes could ease in line with the spike in spending.

“The worst might be behind the likes of Everton to a certain extent,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“If you look back to where we were 12 months, no one knew how long we were going to be in lockdown. So you batten down the hatches accordingly,

“You minimise discretionary spending if you have a genuine concern over your ability to generate revenues in the long term.

“Since the start of this season, we have had full crowds back. There is a degree of confidence that will continue for the foreseeable future.

“We are moving from pandemic to endemic as far as Covid. We are going to learn to live alongside it. That has primed the pump.”

Everton

Everton are next in action against Newcastle United on Tuesday (8 February).

They beat Brentford 4-1 in the Fa Cup fourth round in Frank Lampard’s first match at the helm on Saturday (5 February).
