Everton news: Expert demands radical change after Goodison controversy takes new twist

Paul Robinson has called for referees to come out and explain their decisions after Everton were controversially denied a penalty against Manchester City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said “it’s frustrating” to not get an answer from officials after contentious decisions.

The Toffees were controversially denied a penalty after Rodri seemingly handled the ball in the latter stages of Man City’s 1-0 win at Goodison Park on Saturday.

VAR official Chris Kavanagh decided not to send on-field referee Paul Tierney to the monitor after a lengthy check.

As reported by Sky Sports (1 March), PGMOL managing director Mike Riley has since apologised to Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and manager Frank Lampard after the decision.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the decision, Robinson said: “There was so much riding on that game.

“Decisions like that have a massive impacts on teams. They are season-defining moments.

“I understand why Frank was so intense after the game. If you asked Frank now, he would have the same opinion but he may have put his point across differently.

“My question is, why can’t referees talk to us? Why can’t they speak to us after the game?

“It is so frustrating because we are left to discuss for days why the decision was made. If a referee comes out and explains why, it would easier for us to understand it all. It would be better for the game.”
