Everton news: Keith Wyness horrified at opening new stadium in the Championship

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has admitted opening the club’s new stadium in the Championship would be a “very serious issue”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it is “way too early to even think about relegation” and claimed there are “some positive signs” from the 2024-25 campaign so far.

Everton sit rock bottom after three Premier League games and have conceded 10 goals, scoring two.

The Toffees led Bournemouth 2-0 until the 87th minute but lost the game at Goodison Park on Saturday (31 August) – the first-ever comeback of that kind in the Premier League.

Wyness has already told Football Insider (5 September) that he “wouldn’t even be thinking” about sacking Sean Dyche if he was still involved at the club.

Wyness ‘not unduly concerned’ about ‘very serious’ Everton relegation prospect

Everton’s state-of-the-art new ground is set to open in 2025 – in time for next season.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think it’s way too early in the season to even think about relegation.

“Everton in the last couple of seasons, haven’t won any of the first five games I think. A bad start has become something we’ve gotten used to.

“I’m not unduly concerned.

“If you look at what happened in those first three games. We’ve got to look at how we played in the first 87 minutes against Bournemouth – it was incredible that we lost.

“There are some positive signs. We’ll pull it together.

“But relegation would be a very serious issue. If we started in the new stadium while in the Championship, it would be a big problem.

“But we’re not anywhere near that, and relegation isn’t a word I’m yet willing to use.”
