Everton’s new points deduction appeal plan revealed – Sources

Everton will use the double jeopardy defence as their main argument in their points deduction appeal, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Toffees will claim that they are being punished twice for the same offence in the same season and should have their punishment reduced or scrapped.

The Merseysiders landed a two-point deduction earlier this month (8 April) after they breached the allowed loss threshold of £105million by £16.6million in the three-year period up until the 2022-23 season.

They lodged an appeal against their breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules soon after and a judgement must be heard by 25 May.

However, their 10-point deduction from November, which was reduced to six in February after an appeal, accounted for a breach in their finances in the three years to the 2021-22 season.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Everton believe they are being treated “harshly” because they have now been punished twice for irregularities relating to their 2020-21 and 2021-22 accounts.

However, Football Insider also revealed (20 April) that Sean Dyche’s side are hopeful that they will reclaim at least one point from their points deduction appeal.

The club’s financial struggles look set to continue into next season and they could face another sanction after their recent accounts revealed a statutory loss of £89.1million for the 2022-23 season.

They may face their third punishment in less than a year unless they sanction significant player sales this summer.

Well-placed sources also told Football Insider (20 April) that Everton will be hit with a third sanction at the start of next season due to issues associated with their stadium costs.
