Everton news: Stefan Borson drops ‘massive’ verdict after points deduction twist
Everton resolving their outstanding profit and sustainability (PSR) issues is a “massive” positive for the club moving forward.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s a “big” development for the Premier League to have dropped the stadium interest case.
Everton were docked eight points last season after being charged by the Premier League for two separate spending breaches.
The independent commission that oversaw the second case postponed an argument over the capitalisation of the new stadium interest by the club after ruling it was too complex to be heard at the time, with a further hearing to take place at a later date.
But the Merseysiders confirmed on 17 January they have now resolved all of their outstanding PSR issues after the Premier League formally discontinued the second part of the complaint.
Everton could have landed third points deduction
Borson revealed the case remaining active could have led to a further points deduction.
He told Football Insider: “I think it’s a huge development for them to have got to this position.
“We don’t know exactly how they did it, whether it was just from lobbying, the delay, the Premier League acknowledging that their approach was wrong or whether there is just a general policy across the Premier League to try and turn down the volume on challenges and litigation with its own clubs.
“But whatever the reason, for them to have buried that 2022-23 stadium interest case is a big development because it would have infected multiple years had it gone against them.
“It would have infected the numbers for 2023-24. Had they lost, presumably it would have meant they would have failed for 2023-24.

“It would also have infected the numbers for 2024-25 because of the way that flows through into the cycle, so it’s a massive positive for them that the case has been dropped.
“What it means is their accounts are completely right, which means that they passed 2023-24 and they have got a basis for going forward in 2024-25.”
In other news, Everton want to sell 26-year-old for “£20m” and sign immediate replacement.
