Everton offered Dominic Calvert-Lewin ‘pay-per-play’ deal, his reaction speaks volumes

David Moyes may be regretting letting Dominic Calvert-Lewin leave the club following his fine form for Leeds.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes the striker is what Moyes needs right now.

Everton let Calvert-Lewin leave for free upon the expiry of his contract, and Leeds snapped up the 28-year-old later in the summer transfer window.

Calvert-Lewin scored in six consecutive Premier League games recently, taking his tally up to eight goals for Leeds in 18 appearances.

Everton had one ‘big concern’ over Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks injuries were the only thing holding Calvert-Lewin back on Merseyside.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the striker scored some important goals at the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’ve always been a Dominic fan. He scored some very important goals for Everton in the relegation years, I suppose is what we’d call them under Sean Dyche.

“And look, he was always fairly consistent apart from the injuries, which is always the big concern. I was so sorry it didn’t work out for him at Everton in terms of negotiations, because I think he would have been what we’d have needed right now at Everton.

“But he obviously had a view. And I think that Everton wanted to say, well, look, we might give you more of a pay-per-play related bonus situation rather than a straightforward higher salary, which I think he wanted.”

Everton linked with signing Premier League striker

Everton are targeting a new striker to boost their attack amid poor returns from Beto and Thierno Barry up-front.

Barry’s strike in Everton’s 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest was just his second for the club, whilst Beto only has one Premier League goal this season.

Everton have been linked with Jorgen Strand Larsen at Wolves, but the 25-year-old has also struggled in-front of goal this campaign.
