Kieran Maguire shreds Farhad Moshiri as behind-the-scenes Everton meddling revealed

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri would be well advised to stay out of the football side of running the club.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the British-Iranian’s involvement in the day-to-day at Finch Farm and Goodison Park.

Moshiri dismissed director of football Marcel Brands in December last year, with manager Rafael Benitez following him out of the door soon after.

As quoted by Forbes last Saturday (2 July), the Dutchman has revealed that Moshiri regularly went over his head with footballing decisions during his time with the Toffees.

Brands detailed how he wanted to sign players who would fit the club’s sporting direction and wage structure only for the billionaire to decide to bring in ill-fitting stars on huge contracts.

Poor cost control has been a hallmark of Moshiri’s time at Everton, with the club currently teetering on the edge of potentially serious Financial Fair Play issues.

Maguire explained why Moshiri’s apparent hands-on approach will not have helped the footballing operation either.

“History tells us that football people tend to make better decisions than non-football people,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“We have seen this at Chelsea when Abramovich was bringing the likes of Shevchenko to the club. He obviously was a good player but it’s all about putting 11 compatible footballers who can integrate into a system.

“If there is any sort of board interference in the chessboard that is a modern football squad, that can have a negative impact on results and performances.”

Brands is now sporting director at PSV Eindhoven.

Moshiri was recently in talks with a consortium looking to take over Everton, but negotiations have stalled after an exclusivity agreement lapsed.
