Everton points deduction: Wyness suggests new twist as hearing ends – ‘everyone’s forgetting…’

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has claimed it will be “difficult” for the Premier League to finalise the league table before 24 May.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted top-flight chiefs “haven’t left themselves much breathing space”.

Everton’s hearing into their second Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach concluded on Wednesday (27 March) – with a verdict set to be announced on or before 8 April.

However, any appeal could extend the process up until a backstop date of 24 May – which was set by the Premier League and comes five days after the end of the season.

Nottingham Forest could face a wait up until that date to find out their fate after appealing a four-point deduction for breaching PSR.

‘Everyone’s forgetting’ potential new twist in Everton points deduction controversy, says Wyness

Wyness claimed the process could even stretch beyond the backstop date provided by the Premier League.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “For the last couple of months, we’ve looked at potential timetables.

“Everyone forgets that the legal system works at its own – very slow – pace.

“Often we underestimate the timing – things can be delayed.

“The Premier League haven’t left themselves much breathing space.

“With Forest’s appeal to deal with, and possibly an Everton appeal – I think it may stretch further than the 24 May date given by the Premier League.

“We’re into realms of bank holidays, illness, and all sorts of things which can impact these proceedings.

“It’s going to be difficult to get the league table finalised on time this year, in my opinion.”
