Everton are lining up a move to sign in-demand striker Joe Gelhardt from Wigan, according to a report.
News outlet ESPN claims that the Toffees, Liverpool and Manchester United are all preparing offers to sign the highly-rated 16-year-old.
It is understood that League One champions Wigan are keen to keep hold of their rising star, but are bracing themselves for offers from some of the English giants.
Football Insider verdict:
Gelhardt is a teenage centre-forward being tipped for greatness and it is no surprise that Marco Silva’s side are listed as potential suitors. Everton have a brilliant academy in place right now and are always keen to push youngsters through to their first team when possible. That should make Goodison Park an attractive option for the Wigan attacker, but the presence of Man United and Liverpool are huge too. Gelhardt is currently impressing in Wigan’s Under-18s side and has also represented England up until Under-16 level. He would go straight into Everton’s youth teams if he joined the blue half of Merseyside and a potential loan exit further down the line could make sense. Everton do also need to try bring in a senior option in attack ahead of next year, as Silva’s side will struggle to really put any pressure on the top-six clubs without a prolific goalscoring option.
In other Everton news, they must abandon their £40m pursuit and turn their attention to a Championship flyer.
