Sources: Brian Carey rejected Everton offer after quitting Tottenham

Brian Carey rejected an offer to head the Everton recruitment team after quitting Tottenham, Football Insider understands.

The former defender left Spurs in May after six years as the club’s head of recruitment.

An Everton source has told Football Insider the club were keen for Carey, 54, to take on a similar role, working under director of football Kevin Thelwell.

But he knocked them back and instead joined Reading as director of recruitment in a deal announced on 19 May.

Carey has held roles as assistant manager at Wrexham, Doncaster Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chesterfield.

He also worked as head of professional development at Blackburn Rovers between 2013 and 2015.

He was initially appointed as a scout for the north-west of England at Spurs but his remit was soon broadened to include Europe and later the club’s entire recruitment operation.

Everton are in the process of a reshuffle behind the scenes, with Frank Lampard spearheading several major changes to his staff.

Gareth Prosser has been named the Toffees’ new academy director, reuniting him with Thelwell with whom he has worked at both Derby County and Wolves.

John Ebrell meanwhile has been promoted to player development senior coach after two years in a two-pronged role as head of academy coaching and under-23s assistant.

The club are also, according to Training Ground Guru last Sunday (3 July), recruiting for a new head of academy coaching, loan manager and head of performance analysis.
