Demarai Gray should be Everton’s main target to replace Yannick Bolasie in January, not Memphis Depay.
Everton’s £29million summer buy has had his debut season cut short after he suffered a serious ACL knee injury in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United last Saturday.
It was a huge blow for Ronald Koeman and he admitted he may be forced to find a replacement for Bolasie in January and a number of players could be up for grabs.
Depay has been strongly linked with a loan move away from Manchester United and Everton would be an obvious destination given Bolasie’s injury and Koeman’s links with his compatriot.
However, the electric Gray should be their prime target because he can be a very exciting long-term option.
The 20-year-old has proved he has excellent ability at Leicester City but he has struggled for regular first team action under Claudio Ranieri this season.
That’s not surprising given he is competing with Riyad Mahrez for a place in the team but the club could easily cash in on their £3.5 million bargain buy.
Everton would no doubt be willing to pay a reasonable fee and if Gray was to leave Leicester it would more than likely be on a permanent deal rather than a loan spell like Depay.
Therefore the Blues’ investment would be worthwhile and they’d be bringing in a proven, young Premier League winger who already has experience of winning the league title.
Depay has struggled since moving to England so Gray’s transition would be much simpler.
In other Everton news, this attacker should join Liverpool after being frozen out by Koeman.
