Everton have negotiated a loan-to-buy deal with Watford for Tom Cleverley, according to a reliable journalist.

The Sky Sports website reported on Thursday morning that the 27-year-old was to have a medical with the Hertfordshire-based club ahead of a loan move until the end of the season.

Now, Daily Telegraph chief football correspondent Jason Burt has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Hornets will have the option to buy the midfielder in the deal.

This will be the second loan-to-buy deal that the Merseyside club have negotiated in a matter of days with the Guardian reporting that flop striker Oumar Niasse is heading out in a similar deal to Hull.

Cleverley made the switch to Goodison Park in the summer of 2015 after his contract expired at English giants Manchester United.

He made 30 appearances in his debut campaign for the club with a return of two goals and six assists from his midfield position.

However, following the appointment of Ronald Koeman in the summer he has fallen down the pecking order with just 12 appearances and one assist to his name in all competitions this season.

He will now be hoping a return to Watford could restart his career with his prime years coming.

Football Insider verdict:

Cleverley will find his level with Watford in the lower reaches of the Premier League, which is a level below Everton and one they are eager to move away from after two disappointing campaigns. The expected signing of Morgan Schneiderlin will add more class to the Toffees midfield ranks, meaning that game time for Cleverley would become more limited with the club also out of both domestic cup competitions. Koeman will now be aiming to take Everton back into the Europa League and it is clear that Cleverley is not part of the Dutch manager’s plans to do so with his limited ability.
