Everton takeover: Stefan Borson has news about John Textor deal

Everton’s would-be owner John Textor likely has an agreement in place with his fellow Crystal Palace shareholders for them to purchase or match the price he’s offered by a third party for his stake at Selhurst Park.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Textor could find it difficult to sell his stake to an external buyer due to it only being a minority holding.

The American businessman has entered a period of exclusivity to buy Everton owner Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1-per-cent stake at Goodison Park.

But one complication is the 58-year-old’s 45-per-cent stake in Palace, with Premier League rules forbidding ownership of two clubs in the same division.

The Guardian reported on 21 August Josh Harris and David Blitzer, who own 18-per-cent stakes in the south London club, have seen an offer of around £100million turned down by their compatriot.

John Textor could face difficulties selling Crystal Palace shares

But Borson believes there could be an agreement between Textor and the other Palace shareholders after they have formed a strong relationship in recent years.

“We will have to wait and see what the proposal is to buy Everton,” Borson told Football Insider.

“It doesn’t seem that deliverable at the moment because he’s got the Crystal Palace stake and that is not going to be straightforward to sell.

“It’s a minority holding, which are often not that desirable unless you can work very closely and collaborate with the other 55 per cent.

“I think Textor over the years has formed a strong relationship with those guys.

“But there is no guarantee that a new buyer is going to feel as comfortable with those existing holders.

“I also think there is a probability that there are rights in the shareholder agreement between Textor and the existing holders that allow them to purchase or match the price that he’s offered from a third party.

“There will likely also be a timescale in which they can do that.”
