Everton takeover: Tim Cahill could broker Qatari-backed bid – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed club legend Tim Cahill could play a key role in a potential Qatari takeover bid.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested a Qatari takeover would be “well-received” by Toffees fans.

Everton have been consulting advisors Deloitte about other investment as the 777 Partners takeover bid continues to falter.

777 agreed to buy the Merseysiders from Farhad Moshiri in September 2023 but the deal is yet to be approved by the Premier League amid concerns over their sources of funding.

Recent reports have suggested Everton has been offered to multiple parties – including groups from Qatar.

Everton legend Cahill could be key in Qatari takeover, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Cahill, who played 278 times for the Toffees and is now the Technical Director for the Qatar Football Association, could have a key role in any potential deal.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Tim Cahill has been linked as the face of any potential Qatari bid.

“TIm has done a great job down there with the Aspire Academy and is very involved at a high level with the Qatar national team and their football plan.

“If he was to get the right ear of people in Qatar, he’s a very forceful personality and has done well in business since leaving football – it could be a possibility.

“Qatar is not ridiculous.

“I think it would be well received by fans. There are obviously the political issues which would have to be resolved.

“But of all the nation states, Qatar would be accepted by the Everton fans.

“As with anything in football, it’s 50/50. 50% will hate it, and 50% will love it – that’s just how it goes.”
