Everton to land new points deduction? Stefan Borson drops update today

Everton are likely to receive another devastating points deduction if their ongoing capitalisation case goes against them.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider a negative decision could also lead to the Merseyside giants breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) for 2023-24.

Everton were docked eight points last season after being charged by the Premier League for two separate spending breaches.

The independent commission that oversaw the second case postponed an argument over the capitalisation of the new stadium interest by the club after ruling it was too complex to be heard at the time.

That meant Everton would face a further hearing, but there has been no official update provided to suggest the matter has since been resolved.

If the decision were to go against Sean Dyche’s side, it would mean their financial breaches for 2021-22 and 2022-23 would be significantly more than originally thought, potentially leading to another points deduction.

Everton could have to wait months for PSR case to be resolved

Borson admitted it could still be months before the Merseysiders’ PSR situation is resolved.

He told Football Insider: “We will know a lot more from the middle of this month to see whether they have got through the 2023-24 situation, which I expect them to have done so, aside from the one wrinkle they have.

“That is the outstanding case in respect of the interest, which we think is scheduled for another Premier League hearing. That should have happened by now.

“There have been a few rumours it’s actually already been settled, but we have seen no official confirmation of that. It does look like it’s ongoing.

“It’s amazing because not only will it impact historically the 2022-23 position and could lead to a potential points deduction if it goes against them, but because of the way any decision is going to work, it’s going to have a knock-on effect.

“In the worst-case scenario, it probably would mean they would also fail 2023-24.

“You would have thought they would have wanted that decision out of the way, so they could assess 2023-24 on the accelerated timetable that’s in place and they would know the result by the end of the season.

“But if we actually haven’t even started to deal with the 2022-23 situation yet, if that’s going to take another two months, it’s going to be very close to the end of the season before you get a decision on the other bit if it went against them.

“If you exclude the interest case, you would have thought that they got to 30 June of last year and did the deals they needed to do to be okay for 2023-24.

“If the interest case goes for them, I think they will pass 2023-24 and we don’t need to talk about the situation anymore.”
