Everton told to appoint Hitchen after reliable journalist’s ‘big’ update – Phillips

Kevin Phillips has urged Everton to appoint Steve Hitchen as their new director of football.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland and England striker said the 45-year-old would be “a very smart choice” who would be “a big lift” for the club.

On Wednesday (2 February), Tottenham announced Hitchen had left his position as technical performance director.

According to The Telegraph‘s Matt Law (2 February), Everton want to speak to the Englishman about potentially succeeding Marcel Brands as their director of football.

The Toffees sacked Brands at the beginning of December during a slump in form that also led to the dismissal of Rafael Benitez.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the Merseyside club appointing the newly available Hitchen, Phillips said:

“I think he’d be a very smart choice.

“[Frank] Lampard is already building an experienced backroom. I think he’s been very wise bringing in Paul Clement and Ashley Cole.

“To add someone like Steve Hitchen to that would be great. He has experience of making big deals.

“Everton are at the start of a building process again. They need to start from the ground up or in this case the backroom start up. They were not able to bring in loads of players in January.

“I think a fresh voice, a different opinion and view on things would be a big lift for Everton.”
