Everton told to get Tosun ‘off the wage bill’ after £35m Kieran Maguire reveal – pundit

Everton must “move on” Cenk Tosun and a number of other fringe players in the January window, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Premier League goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said Rafael Benitez “badly” needs to strengthen his side but will be unable to without departures because of Financial Fair Play.

Tosun, 30, has just over six months left on his contract at Goodison Park.

The Athletic‘s Patrick Boyland revealed (13 December) the centre-forward wants to reject a January exit and fight for his place in Benitez’s side.

A number of clubs are said to be interested in the Turkey international, who has played just six minutes of football this season.

Analysis from Football Insider finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed how the Toffees are £35million behind their FFP target.

Robinson insisted players “like Tosun” need to be sold in January.

“Tosun has got to be one of a number of players who leave in January,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“We all know how Everton are in relation to the Financial Fair Play. The manager cannot strengthen that squad without moving players on.

“Players like Tosun, who haven’t played, need to be sold. It would be difficult to get any kind of financial reward for a player like that though. Reducing the wage bill is what is important for them though.

“Look at Benitez’s activity in the summer. He got Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend in for less than £2million. That shows you how close to FFP that club is.

“Tosun and others who the manager doesn’t want need to be moved on in the January window. Everton need to use the window carefully. The team needs strengthening badly.”

In other news, a pundit has claimed Everton players ‘will not like’ what Benitez told journalists on Sunday.
