Everton top source shares ’emergency’ reaction after deal agreed
Everton made just one January signing as the deadline passed earlier this week, bringing midfielder Carlos Alcaraz to Goodison Park on loan from Flamengo.
The window has prompted disappointment from some fans, who may have been expecting a more comprehensive overhaul after The Friedkin Group’s takeover and subsequent appointment of David Moyes in the Goodison Park dugout.
Despite recent financial trouble, Football Insider revealed last week (29 January) that Everton had the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) capacity to agree some last-ditch signings.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness, who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, has had his say on what happened in the last throes of the window.
Everton’s ex-CEO shares instant verdict as transfer window shuts
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Everton’s recent Premier League form meant new arrivals were no longer an “emergency”.
Moyes has masterminded wins over Tottenham, Brighton and Leicester City since his arrival – leaving the Toffees nine points clear of the relegation zone after 23 games.
Wyness suggested Everton have been “sensible” after their double PSR points deduction in the 2023-24 campaign.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s partly due to PSR, but I think the three wins in recent weeks helped change the mindset at Everton.
“It was no longer a case of bringing in players as an emergency.
“The results have given Everton the luxury of waiting for players who can make a real difference.

“I think they’ve been sensible. Alcaraz could be an exciting signing, he’s on loan with an option to buy.
“There was no need to push the PSR boundaries. We were tight, there was room – but there is just no need to push it.
“Broja is not going to be out as long as expected with his injury, so the striker situation could turn around in a few weeks.
“Overall, the nine points have made a big difference. That was the reason for the lack of action.”

‘Everton could agree four £50m deals this summer’
Everton transfer chiefs will now be planning ahead for the summer transfer window with the club moving into their Bramley-Moore Dock stadium in time for the 2025-26 campaign.
Wyness has previously told Football Insider that Everton will be in a position to spend £50million on four players this summer on the back of increased revenue levels.
One player Moyes’ side could return for is West Brom winger Tom Fellows, who has been a long-term target at Goodison Park.
