Kieran Maguire: Everton chiefs livid with executive amid ‘Whatsapp group’ claim
Everton will be glad to see the back of Premier League chairman Gary Hoffman after his handling of various crises in the last 18 months.
So says finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Hoffman’s resignation was announced on 17 November.
Hoffman attracted criticism for his handling of the recent Newcastle United takeover, which clubs fear will distort competition in the Premier League.
The respected businessman was also forced to reckon with the Project Big Picture and Super League breakaway plots, as well as the pandemic.
Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has made no secret of his ambitions to smash the glass ceiling in the Premier League.
And Maguire suggests that officials at Goodison will not have held Hoffman in high regard as a result.
“You could see why Everton would have been unhappy with Gary Hoffman,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“That is in respect of Super League because there were no advantages to a club like Everton. It would have resulted in an 18-team Premier League.
“You find me an Everton fan who wants four fewer fixtures per season to look forward to and no chance of competing in Europe.
“There has been criticism in terms of his overall lack of communication too.
“That could be regarded as harsh because he would argue that he was bound by legal agreements by what he could and couldn’t say.

“You can’t tell one person because the chief executive Whastapp groups tend to be robust when it comes to sharing information around.
“His hands were tied and it is an impossible job to keep 20 club owners happy.”
