Everton will discover new points deduction fate ‘soon’ – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed he is expecting a hearing on a potential third points deduction to come “very quickly”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the case is based around accounting rules and will be “pretty black and white” for the Merseysiders.

Premier League chiefs claim £6.5million, which was attributed to new stadium interest payments, should be added to the club’s spending for the 2022-23 campaign and mean the club incur a further deduction under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Everton were already deducted two points for a £16million overspend in the 2022-23 season – as well as seeing six points docked for a PSR breach a season earlier.

The Toffees’ new stadium is set to open in 2025 ahead of the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

Sean Dyche’s side would be hit hard by a points deduction after starting the season with zero points from a possible nine, conceding 10 goals in the process.

Everton to discover third points deduction fate ‘very quickly’

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think the verdict on this will come pretty soon.

“This is quite interesting because the Premier League are questioning the Everton auditor’s opinion.

“It’s like they have a different take on accounting rules.

“I’m quite surprised at this whole situation because normally the rules are pretty black and white.

“There are ways you can try and cook the books, so to speak, but this one seems pretty clear.

“The case will hinge on whether there was an interest payment on the stadium or not, so it’s pretty clear.

“I’m surprised there is some shade of grey that needs exploring here.

“The Premier League have to decide whether the Everton auditors are correct or not, and the club will hope the auditors can back up their opinion.

“I fully expect this hearing to happen very quickly.”
