Everton’s third points deduction case may be ‘thrown out’ – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he is “hopeful” the club’s potential third points deduction will be “thrown out”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Everton’s auditors will be able to robustly defend themselves against Premier League accusations when the matter goes before an independent panel.

Top-flight chiefs allege £6.5million, which was attributed to new stadium interest payments, should be added to the club’s spending for the 2022-23 campaign and mean the club incur a further deduction under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Everton were already docked two points under PSR for a £16million overspend in the 2022-23 season.

The Sun reported on 10 August that an independent commission have yet to tell the Toffees or the Premier League when they will reach a decision – despite both parties pushing for an answer.

It was also claimed that the Premier League initially pushed for £17million of interest payments to be examined but saw that proposal rejected.

Everton could dodge third points deduction, says Wyness

Wyness admitted there is a “chance” Everton land another deduction, but insisted he remains hopeful.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Everton’s auditors have cleared this, and it’s the Premier League who are challenging that decision.

“It’s a case of classification of interest payments.

“Hopefully, they’ll come to a resolution and all parties can see that the accounting principles were followed.

“I do think there is a high chance of this being thrown out.

“I’m hopeful that will be the case, but there is a chance they will be found guilty and another points deduction will be handed down.

“I’m not party to the actual accounting, but my opinion is that the auditors will be able to challenge this with the Premier League.”
