‘Every penny scarce’ at Rangers as January move for striker in doubt – pundit

Rangers “do not have the money” to sign reported striker target Kevin van Veen permanently this January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie is adamant that the Gers do not have the finances to pull off a deal, but a loan would prove “good business”.

The former Motherwell ace claimed that Philippe Clement’s side remain interested in a winter move after he was linked to an Ibrox swap last summer.

Rangers

Rangers have already secured Wolves forward Fabio Silva on loan for the remainder of the season, and Football Insider revealed (5 January) that the club have accelerated plans to bring in a second striker.

McAvennie believes that this can only be the case if the Gers dip into the loan market and questioned whether a move for the current Groningen man would be appropriate.

“We can wave over it as much as we want, but Rangers do not have the money to buy players,” he told Football Insider.

“If they get a loan deal for Kevin van Veen, it could be good business for them.

“But every penny is scarce at the moment at Ibrox.

“But they won’t make any more mistakes now that Graeme Souness is there – they won’t be any more duds.

“He did well at Motherwell, but can he cut it at Rangers? I’m not sure.

Rangers

“He hasn’t been setting the world on fire in Holland, but he’ll get a lot of chances at Rangers.

“But do you get the van Veen from a couple of years ago, or do you get the one they have now?”
