Every Premier League star fighting for their future in January, including two Newcastle heroes

The Premier League looks set for yet another busy January transfer window as clubs try to boost their squads.

Summer spending across the division broke beyond the £3billion mark, with Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool the standout piece of business as it set a new British transfer record.

The future of Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo looks set to be one of the major stories of the upcoming window, but January can often be more about outgoings than incomings for clubs.

There are several stars across the Premier League who are struggling for gametime or are seeing their performances come under plenty of scrutiny, and with that in mind, Football Insider rounds up every big-name star who is fighting for their future ahead of January.

Man City set for potential exodus as Liverpool aim for Harvey Elliott solution

Omar Marmoush has had limited gametime at Manchester City so far this season, with the summer arrival of Rayan Cherki forcing him further down Pep Guardiola’s pecking order.

The Egyptian has started just two league games in 2025-26, and he has to find a way to force the boss into giving him more opportunities, or he may be left with no choice but to look elsewhere.

James Trafford will also be keen to prove to Guardiola that he is worthy of regular minutes, be that at City or elsewhere, while outcast Kalvin Phillips will surely be pushing to get away from the Etihad Stadium.

Across Manchester, Kobbie Mainoo appears desperate to get away from Old Trafford, as he continues to find himself on the fringes of the squad under Ruben Amorim.

Liverpool are continuing to seek a solution for Harvey Elliott’s plight at Aston Villa, with the midfielder effectively frozen out during his loan spell with the second city outfit.

Raheem Sterling is another big-name star who will be looking for an escape route from a difficult situation, as he remains out in the cold at Chelsea and has yet to play a competitive minute all season.

Newcastle and Tottenham duos facing hugely uncertain futures

Brennan Johnson is attracting interest at Tottenham, with Football Insider recently revealing that Brentford and Ipswich Town have joined the race for the winger.

The Welshman has had a limited impact for Spurs this season, and now looks set to be shown the door in January amid increased competition from the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons.

Guglielmo Vicario is also being linked with a move away, as he continues to be lambasted for his inconsistency by the fans.

Newcastle could also be facing a pair of potential departures, with Nick Pope and Joe Willock both firmly out of favour with Eddie Howe.

Willock finds himself behind some extremely strong competition in the midfield for the Magpies, while Pope is out of contract at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old has been a reliable servant for the North East outfit over the years, but Howe’s decision to persist with Aaron Ramsdale between the posts for the recent defeat to Manchester United is perhaps an indication of where his intentions lie.
