Everything David Moyes said ahead of Sunderland reunion with Everton

David Moyes will be hoping for a successful reunion with his old club as Everton prepare to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Everton fans have warmed to Moyes immediately since he replaced Sean Dyche in January, helping the Toffees to avoid relegation from the Premier League in 2024-25.

Jack Grealish has been an inspired signing for Everton, alongside Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Carlos Alcaraz, Tyler Dibling, and Thierno Barry, but there are still plenty of improvements to be made.

Of course, before coming back to Merseyside, having been with the Toffees between 2002 and 2013, he has also had spells at Man United, Sunderland, and most famously, West Ham.

With the Scot now returning to the Stadium of Light on Monday, 3 November, he has spoken glowingly about the club, and also what went wrong during his time with the Black Cats.

David Moyes looks back fondly on his time at Sunderland

Speaking in his press conference, Moyes said: “I had a really good time and I loved being up there. It was a good club, but maybe at the time we were on the back end of a difficult period.”

He was asked if it was “right club, wrong time” with the Black Cats in 2017: “I think it was possibly. In management, you have to experience different opportunities, and unfortunately, we didn’t get things going.

“I look back with disappointment, but Sunderland and I have both moved on since then.”

Instead of fighting for Sunderland now, however, he will be doing absolutely everything in his power to bring all three points back to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday.

What is Moyes’ record like against the Black Cats?

While the Black Cats look like a completely different team under Regis Le Bris, currently fourth in the Premier League table after nine matches, history could be everything here.

In 22 games against Sunderland, Moyes has won 14 of them, boasting a 63 per cent win rate, losing just two games across the years. That is an impressive stat that the Scot needs to hang on to.

With Le Bris’ side losing just one of their last seven league matches, it will be much easier said than done, but the manager has given himself a brilliant benchmark to improve upon on Monday.
