Everything you need to know about Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton’s nomination for Sports Personality of the Year 2025
England footballers Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton are among six sporting stars to be nominated for the 2025 Sports Personality of the Year award.
2025 has been another wholly successful year for women’s football in England, after Sarina Wiegman led her side to a successful defence of their European Championships crown.
Kelly and Hampton each played major roles in the Lionesses’ triumph back in July, particularly in the final against Spain, as the former scored the winning penalty and the latter saved two in the shootout.
Both women ply their trade in the Women’s Super League for Arsenal and Chelsea respectively, and they have each also enjoyed stellar years at club level too.
Their standout form has earned them both a nomination to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, and Football Insider has delved deeper into why they are up for the award, who they are up against, and how fans can watch the ceremony.
How Kelly and Hampton have performed this year
Quick winger Kelly re-joined her childhood club Arsenal on loan from Man City in the January window, and scored twice in 13 appearances as they won the Women’s Champions League against Barcelona in May.
She was only named in the starting eleven once at Euro 2025, in the final against Spain, but did make the difference off the bench in the semi-final against Italy with a dramatic 119th-minute winner to send England through.
Kelly won plaudits from throughout the footballing world for her impactful performances and was named in the Team of the Tournament alongside teammate Hampton.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper also made a huge impression at the Euros after being named as England’s first-choice stopper following Mary Earps’ surprise retirement.
Hampton had made 34 appearances for Chelsea in the 2024-25 campaign as they won a domestic treble, and carried such form into the tournament as she was the hero in penalty shootouts against Sweden and Spain.
Aston Villa keeper Emi Martinez was blown away by Hampton’s performances, and she won a trophy that he has got his hands on twice before in September, as she was awarded the Yashin Trophy for being the best women’s stopper in the world this year.

A stacked line-up of nominees sees Kelly and Hampton pitted against womens rugby star Ellie Kildunne, darts number one player Luke Littler, golfer Rory McIlroy and Formula 1 driver Lando Norris.
Such strong competition means that neither are the favourites to win, with multiple major bookmakers listing Masters winner McIlroy as odds-on favourite at 1/2, while F1 victor Norris comes in at 7/2 and Kelly is next at 4/1.
Littler is as short as 10/1 with some bookmakers, while Hampton comes in at a long-shot of 33/1 and Kildunne is an outsider to win at 50/1.
The awards ceremony is set to be held at MediaCityUK in Salford on Thursday, 18 December, and will be broadcast live on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer from 7pm, with voting opening and closing during the show.
