Ex-Fifa official calls for investigation after ‘terrible’ Liverpool twist
Keith Hackett has called for Uefa to launch a review into the “radically wrong” scenes ahead of the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool on Saturday (28 May).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Uefa and Fifa referee suggested Andy Burnham could play a key role after his work around the Hillsborough disaster.
As relayed by BBC Sport on Sunday (29 May), Liverpool have demanded an investigation into the “unacceptable issues” their fans faced when trying to enter the Stade de France.
The game was delayed by over 30 minutes before Real Madrid eventually ran out 1-0 winners to lift their 14th Champions League trophy.
“It all smacks of something radically wrong and something has to be done,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“Therefore I think it’s got to be a really deep review and honesty about what went wrong to make sure it’s not repeated. It was terrible viewing.
“Ultimately at the end of the day, we cannot have a repeat of this. We are rather lucky that nobody was killed, that’s my view.
“When I read social media there are people I know who have held responsible positions, like Cathy Long, a long-time employee of the Premier League, she knows football inside out and was very critical of Uefa.

“Liverpool are right to demand a review. I would like someone like Andy Burnham, who has got great experience with the Hillsborough disaster, to pick that up on behalf of Liverpool and give a degree of independence to proceedings and ensure that things are actioned.
“For me, he’s the answer. To review, to be involved.”
