Ex-Fifa official demands major change after Todd Cantwell development at Norwich City
Norwich City star Todd Cantwell is right – the Championship needs to introduce VAR.
That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Cantwell demand a major change in the Championship.
The 24-year-old took to Twitter on Saturday (6 August) to insist that the technology is needed in the second-tier after Norwich City were denied a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.
Tom Naylor launched into a challenge on Aarons in the closing stages as Norwich searched for a late winner.
Referee Matt Donohue was well positioned on the edge of the penalty area but the Canaries’ appeals were waved away and the game continued.
As quoted by Wigan Today after the game, Dean Smith insisted the decision not to award his side a spot-kick was “scandalous” and the challenge was “nasty”.
“This does show that, with the correct use, VAR has to come in in the Championship,” Hacket told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“Well, we know that the IFAB and Fifa, Fifa in particular, are looking at this second-tier VAR system, a less expensive VAR system. When that’s available, that should come in.
“I think the Championship is such a tight competition that it should be in anyway.”
Norwich City are next in Championship action on Saturday (13 August) when they travel to the MKM Stadium to face the unbeaten Hull City.
The Canaries are in the second round of the EFL Cup after beating Birmingham City on penalties in the first round on Tuesday (9 August).
In other news, three European big guns have made approaches to sign a Norwich City star.
