Ex-Fifa official issues ’10-match’ Jurgen Klopp ban claim after confirmed Liverpool news

There is something wrong in the game if Jurgen Klopp does not receive a touchline ban for Liverpool, according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee delivered his verdict after Klopp was hit with an FA charge for his behaviour during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Man City last week (16 October).

The 55-year-old was shown a red card at Anfield when he shouted in the face of an assistant referee when a challenge from Bernardo Silva on Mohamed Salah went unpunished.

The FA confirmed last week (18 October) that he had been charged with “improper” behaviour.

As quoted by the Mirror on Friday (21 October), Klopp admitted he had accepted the charge and any punishment that comes his way which will likely be a one-game touchline ban.

“If he doesn’t [get a ban], there’s something wrong in the game because others who have done similar things have received a ban. I expect a ban and a fine, for sure,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I’ve heard people say it should be a 10-match ban and others say that he needs anger management and all that, it’s very difficult.

“He’s so passionate and you don’t want to take away passionate managers but the way that he barked into the ear of a very experienced assistant referee was out of order.

“I agree with him, to an extent, that there was a free-kick that should have been given. Let’s make no mistake, Salah was fouled.

“That’s why he was trying to make the point, he was trying to protect his own player against the poor decision. He’s got to be like the players and have self-control.

“He’s admitted he got it wrong and his public apology might help him as mitigating circumstances.”
